PETER ANDREY SMITH

Peter Andrey Smith is a reporter who has covered the impact of science and technology on the lives of people, especially those living on the margins of society. In the past, he’s contributed to the print editions of The New York Times Magazine, Outside, and Wired, among other print publications. His coverage of the microbiome has proven remarkably popular and a feature on how bacteria affect brain function and behavior, “Can the Bacteria in Your Gut Explain Your Mood?” remained among the most widely read and emailed stories on the Times’s website. Smith, who lives in Brooklyn, has a track record for seeking out and gaining unprecedented access to public and private sources. He’s reported stories with WNYC’s Radiolab and the Reply All podcast, and has appeared as a guest on WBUR and Science Friday. His work has been supported with grants from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, the University of California Berkeley’s 11th Hour Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship, and the Investigative Fund at the Nation Institute. He is a lifelong nerd, and the son of a pharmacist.
