E.R. Frank

E.R. Frank is the author of five novels.  She won the Teen People Book Club NEXT Award for her first novel, Life Is Funny (2000). America (2002) was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and was adapted into a 2009 television movie starring Rosie O'Donnell and Philip Johnson.  YALSA honored both novels by placing them on the 100 Best of the Best for the 21st Century book list.  Friction (2003) was a Junior Library Guild selection. Wrecked (2005) was chosen as a Best Book of the Year by Bank Street.  All four titles made the YALSA Best Book for Young Adults list in the year published and also received starred reviews from a variety of reviewers. Her latest novel, Dime, (Atheneum, May 2015) tells the story of Dime, a 14-year-old girl stuck in the foster care system in Newark, N.J. She becomes drawn into the world of prostitution and must find the strength to break free of the life she’s become entangled in, though it’s the only “family” she’s every known. Dime was named one of the School Library Journal's Best Books of 2015 in the Young Adult category. 

Dime was selected as one of the NYPL's Best Books for Teens, was featured on the Kansas State Reading Circle List and was a Texas Tayshas Reading List Selection, was featured on ALA Amelia Bloomer List, and was one of ALA/YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults.

E.R. Frank was raised in Richmond, Virginia, attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and completed her Masters degree at the Hunter Graduate School of Social Work in New York City. In addition to being a writer, she is also a psychotherapist with a specialty in trauma. Frank earned a post graduate certificate from New York’s Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and is an EMDRIA approved EMDR consultant.

E.R. Frank is a member of the Child Welfare League of America’s national advisory board and was also an advisory board member of New York City’s Behind the Book.

After many years living in Brooklyn and Manhattan, she has settled in New Jersey with her husband and two children.
